Peptides as Skin Rejuvenating Treatments
Dermatologist Dr. Robert S. Baraczek develops a range of cosmetic products specially designed to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo. Since 2017, Dr. Robert S. Baraczek has owned and operated a skin-care focused consulting practice, which specializes in research involving skin-rejuvenating peptide treatments.
Healthy skin generates bioactive peptides. Peptides are chains of amino acids that are essential to building and maintaining important proteins in the skin. Scientists first discovered how to create synthetic peptides in the early 20th century. Since the 1980s, man-made peptides have been included in skin treatment products to boost production of proteins such as collagen, elastin, and fibronectin.
When applied topically, certain peptides can stimulate the production of these proteins. As a result, the skin can repair skin fibers damaged by excessive sun exposure. The production of collagen and elastin also reduces the appearance of wrinkles and results in smoother looking skin.
There is significant ongoing research into other applications for synthetic peptides. So far, some evidence has demonstrated its use for promoting wound healing and treating hyperpigmentation.
